This Fighter also has the capability to carry weapons pods. There are five different variations of pod available to the pilot dependent upon role assigned:

1: Heavy Fighter: No pod, this is a default setting for the fighter and gives the best performance from onboard systems

2: Assault Fighter: Two Type-J phaser emitters shoulder mounted forward of Impulse Engines, slightly reduces maneuverability (See Razor fighter for Specís on Type J)

3: Light Bomber: Micro Tri-Cobalt launcher, under slung forward of Impulse Engines, 8 warheads, has a negative effect on maneuverability; therefore the fighter should be escorted by faster craft

4: Light Bomber2: 6 full sized Photon/Quantum Torpedoes under the wings. This has an adverse effect upon the fighters maneuverability and should only be considered when placed in a bomber role (also see notes for 3)

Also: The fighter has six hard points under the wings and fuselage. These can carry any standard Starfleet ordinance, but the fighter cannot carry any other pod at the same time as these hard points are used, these are used in weapon configuration 4

Notes: This fighter was developed during the dominion way, in an effort to replace the ageing peregrine with a more balanced craft.  Due to a recent attack on the colony of Rosevelt 6 where a Marine detachment from the Tolkien came under heavy fire from peregrine fighters, and no air support was available, resulting in the detachment taking heavy casualties, the then Captain Sykes, reactivated the project.

This fighter is also capable of entering a planets atmosphere for a short period of time and is able to give fire support to troops on the ground.  In this role it excels in due to its shielding and heavy armor compared to surface craft.

Combat Roles: The Broadsword performs best when employed in a bomber or ground attack role where its secondary weapon capacity give it an advantage, this coupled with its small size (in relation to a capital ship) gives it the best chance of delivering its payload and returning to base.

In the Bomber role the Broadsword should at all times be escorted by other fighters, or other Broadswords which are configured as fighters.

Pod attachment: The pods the Broadsword uses are different to anything else in use in Starfleet, they are designed to be quickly changed, so a Broadsword that has just landed as a fighter can be re-launched as a bomber in a matter of minutes, this gives an amazing amount of flexibility.

The pods fit into several points in the Broadswords airframe, these are special points where attachments to the fighters systems are located, and also the airframe can take the extra stresses that will be placed upon it.

The pod use a dual attachment system of maglock and docking point, the maglock secures the pod to the fighter, so that the pod is easily ejected if need be.  The docking points are used to provide power to the pod, and telemetry from the fighter these are direct connections to the fighters systems, these connections do not make 'direct connection' so to speak to the ports on the fighter, this is achieved by using optical connections for data, and the 'tessla' effect for power.

The advantages of this system is the pods do not have to carry there own power supplies and therefore are lighter and more damage resistant, but provide power drain on the fighter reducing power that can be allocated to different systems.
